No mans land: Apple Vs Google

Google’s mobile operating sytem, Android, was greeted as a breath of fresh air to smart phone lovers as it was intuitive, responsive and all together looked fantastic with its sleek lines, zooming functions and scrolling options.

The number of Apps available to download is also growing steadily with some iPhone Apps being adapted for the Andriod operating sytsem. It has grown enormously since its launch and has grown vastly in popularity with both phone manufacturers and as ‘possibly’ the best OS and UI available on a mobile phone.

With the Nokia N Series sales dipping and HTC”s Android powered phones sales growing just where will this fast moving operating system be in 2010? Will it reign true? Or will Apple release an update to its software that truly seperates them from the competition.

My opinion? Android powered phones will dominate throughout 2010 with the introduction of a range of mobile phones from HTC. The iPhone will see a reduction in their market share and pretty soon will create some sort of advertisement based around their ‘it just works’ method out of pure frustration.

Nokia will lose out, again, and as always Samsung simply won’t adapt to the change in consumer behaviour. Samsung will most probably just update their OS rather than power all their handsets with Android – which would be a shame because Samsung’s handsets are actually quite capable and are good looking e.g. The Galaxy – what I want to see is a new Omnia or Tocco with Android < that’d be a really good step for them.

Motorola have adapted early, they made a smart move burning up their business resources and investing in backing Android – it has enabled them to create a truly fantastic phone in the Motorola Droid.

Because of the functionality of Android, and the up coming release of handsets powered by it, I think I am safe to say that Android will control the market share in the UK, USA and Europe. Once the Americans get their hands on the HTC Bravo (Google phone) they will see just how ‘un-capable’ the iPhone is compared to it.

Below are the pictures of three upcoming 2010 phones in HTC’s Line up ( I am sorry for the unreadable text on the images);

This is going to be the killer. It has a 1GHz Snap dragon chip and 5 mega pixel camera. It will be housed in a gorgeous mix of fine plastic and metal and be thinner than the iPhone. It will also have Androids latest 2.1 offering and a 3.7 inch AMOLED display.

Leaks-HTC-Legend-slide-2009-12-14-580x299

The HTC Legend could be a top seller and features; A QWERTY keypad, 3.2 inch AMOLED display, 5 mega pixel camera and a 500Hz CPU (around half the speed of the Bravo, but still a fast puppy).

Leaks-HTC-Tide-slide-2009-12-14-580x297

The HTC Tide will be the cheapest of HTC’s Android 2010 line up and will feature a numerical keypad (for people still living it old school ;) ) and a 2.6 inch touch screen, it will be housed in a metal setting and should appeal to thousands upon thousands of people as it will be one of the first android phones which isn’t either QWERTY or touch gesture defined.

The phones above are ‘leaked’ marketing information direct from a HTC employee which was picked up on a forum 2 days ago. The Bravo looks gorgeous and I have to say, without a shadow of a doubt, that it will destroy the iPhone.

In terms of market share perhaps Apple could keep a lot of it, but I think they will have to create a big upgrade in terms of both hardware and software – a new updated and fresher UI would be nice – as would a matte finish to the phone (less fingerprints). They will need a new CPU too as to match the 1GHz monstrosity on the Bravo.

But we know Apple and their advertising. They genuinely define their marketing to sub-conscious branding and create the illusion that you always need an iPhone < so when you see one you automatically want to fiddle.

I love Android, truly I do, I just hope more mobile phone manufacturers jump on the band wagon because if they don’t, well, I think they could be losing out on a substantial sales increase on particular handsets. Mind, if that happens then what is the unique selling point of any of the phones? It’ll have to be hardware defined, possibly cameras with a good lense instead of pointless mega pixels?

    I think Android will rule the world. Well, Google rather – I mean they already dominate the internet and now are moving to hardware – they are worth 220 Billion pounds which is just ridiculous.Thanks for the original opinions I completely agree.Regards,Another fellow Technoholic ;)
