Ahh the laws on user information. Long it has been that it is required by law that personal and private information may never be sold or distributed to any third party, and to the shock of many, Apple has just come under the firing line.

Apple and the makers of top iPhone apps like Dictionary.com have been issued with a lawsuit after allegedly passing user data onto advertisers, which has allowed them to make substantial profits through marketing.

The lawsuit, which has been filed in the US, North Carolina, accuses the app makers of giving up the user’s location and device identity so that advertisers can target specific users within the specific apps such as Dictionary.com.

The main premise behind the suit is UDID (Unique Device Identification) which is a number that Apple issues each iPhone with from the factory. Apps like Dictionary.com have been using this to their advantage, and building profiles of iPhone users and targeting specific advertisements at them, so the lawsuit claims.
