Apple Senior Executive resigns, iPhone 4 flaw to blame?

It’s an interesting title isn’t it – and one which has to have some truth in it. Mark Papermaster, Apple’s senior vice-president of devices hardware engineering, is leaving the company after less than two years after he was controversially lured from IBM. Apple would not say whether he had resigned or been dismissed, but his details have already been removed from Apple’s corporate website.
Mark Papermaster’s immediate departure comes after some iPhone 4 customers reported reception issues with the new phone, which sports a radically different antenna design to previous models. Apple wrapped the iPhone 4’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi antennas around the outside of the device—a move which has come out a flop after the amount of people complaining about signal drops when the iPhone is held a certain way.
Papermaster’s departure has certainly raised many eyebrows; people have said that the timing is inauspicious and that he could be a scapegoat; on the other hand, however, it may have to do with how he handled the situation internally when the reception issue arose, whether or not he had anything to do with the problem in the first place.
[Update]: Apparently, and according to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Papermaster lost Steve Jobs’ confidence months ago < why we will never know.
