Ten of the best free classic games for the iPhone
As a child growing up there was no such thing as mobile phones that allowed you to play ‘complicated games’ – In fact, the best game any mobile phone manufacturer could come up with was Snake – which was then followed by Snake 2 and was only available on Nokia handsets. Now, however, mobile phones have advanced so much that 3D rendering is now viable – graphical overlays can now be apparent and highly complex layered graphics can be showcased.
The iPhone is a prime example of a handset which has a fantastic array of game apps – from Nazi Zombies (which is admittedly pretty rubbish) all the way to Doom – which is admittedly quite brilliant. But if you were like me , and grew up around board games – and long days with grandma hammering you at checkers, then you should have a genuine love for all the classic games that you played – and fond memories of all the time they passed.
And so here is a list of Ten of the best free tabletop games for the iPhone downloadable through the iTunes store. I have tried my best to cover all the classics – albeit not all of them, but hopefully you will find one or two you had no idea about – and can get those fingers back on board < no pun intended =).

Checkers free is, well, an app for Checkers – and definitely one of the best. You can play one player against an AI or play against human opponents with fully configurable names, an undo button for mistaken clicks, and more. Future releases will include rules for various checkers games from around the world.

iTac Lite lets you play tic-tac-toe against your friends and keep track of your win/loss ratios. The game has two different themes for you to play, which is pretty cool. iTac Lite should be updated soon too with more themes to play, for the time being though iTac is quite addictive, and you should be able to kill 10 minutes when waiting for the train.

Anybody who says they have never played rock-paper-scissors is a lier. In fact, it is one of the most well known games of the past ten years. So, naturally, there is nothing better than an app which lets you play it against an AI. Free, fun and quick to download rock-paper-scissors is awesome.

There are loads of Reversi apps out there. But few which allow three levels of skill, skins support, two player support, 3D animation and more. This is a really cool app – hence the name! But, it is also such an intuitive game that even if you have never played it you will become familiar in no time.

This is the traditional 15-piece slider puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. You have to try and get the pieces in order by sliding them around the board (display). This app also offers up a 6×6 version, which is pretty cool – and it is free!

ChessO allows you to customize boards & pieces, choose different timing rules, control to undo, flip the board and more. There are loads of chess apps out there – including international multiplayer competition apps but for simple AI gaming then this app is pretty slick.

aMaze! Lite is an implementation of the old-style wooden labyrinth ball game. It requires you to gently tilt the iPhone around to work the ball through the obstacles to get to the various holes around the board, complete fun at your fingertips.

Four in a row is one of the best games for the iPhone, period. Similar to the classic Connect Four game, Four in a Row Free allows you to play against your Apple gadget on easy, medium or hard levels. It also supports multiplayer.

Mahjong Lite is a 3D version of the well known mahjong matching tile game. You can move around the three dimensional board to find all the matches using your fingers. The Lite version features three different board layouts.

Cribbage Lite is a single player version of the classic game cribbage and allows you to play against the computer. It cuts the deck to determine who goes first, keeps track of stats and more. Later features may include multi-player.
