Tiny Wings iPhone App Review

Tiny Wings Review

Well well well. The last time we did an iPhone app review here was of Angry Birds, and subsequently we have not done one since opting for tangible hardware handhelds for your reading pleasure. So why the change?

Well I had heard from friends all week about a new iPhone App called Tiny Wings so got downloading from the App Store. At £0.59 the price of this app is at the lowest end of costs, and it has mostly 5 star reviews from users on Apple’s app store. So are these 5 star reviews real? That’s what we aimed to find out.

Overview

Tiny Wings is about a bird (type completely unknown, it looks like a new creation) which has (you guessed it) tiny wings, which means the poor little chap quite simply can’t make any air and fly with the big birds in the sky. Feeling obsolete, your aim is to make it feel better whilst having a whole lotta’ fun, by simply speeding up this tiny rather cute bird and giving him air off of hills.

In game

Tiny Wings App

At first glance you’ll notice that the graphics of the game are very nice, as is the App icon, and although this game hasn’t been fully optimised for the Retina Display, you can not see any staircase effect unless zooming in on images.

At menu selection you have ‘play’, ‘scores’, ‘options’, ‘help’ and ‘online’. You also get an objectives button which gives you aims within the game, although you’ll find yourself ignoring this thanks to a fantastic physics engine in game which is quite simply going to keep you entertained for atleast half an hour before you go back to the menu.

When you get in to the game and kick off, your little bird springs in to life and slowly slides down the hill. You have to hold your finger down on the screen to gain speed and then let go for the bird to flap its wings. You have to do this with perfect timing, meaning there is mastery to this game, or else your bird will quite simply lose all its momentum and you’ll end up losing.

So far I have managed to get to level 3, where the hills get a whole lot trickier, but i’ll keep you updated on when I actually get round to completing this highly addictive game.

The one bad point for this app is it’s shelf life, or the length of time it’ll remain on your iPhone. The problem is not game play or graphics, but rather depth, because the game will get samey after a while. Let’s just hope that the developers of the app update it with new maps etc. and make customers happy.

Conclusion

Overall I am will rate this app four out five for fun, usability, graphics and mastery. The app itself will almost certainly keep you going for a long time, and you’ll find yourself constantly (for the first few hours of purchase at least) going back for more. So is this the best bird game since Angry Birds? Possibly. Now go fly baby!

4/5

Actually the graphics haven’t been optimised for the Retina Display, and are in fact really blurry/pixelised. To make it easier to spot the difference, take a screenshot then double tap zoom on on anything, and notice the staircasing effect.
