Intel’s latest refresh to the 2nd Generation Core family (Also known as Sandy Bridge-E) , the i7-3960X desktop class CPU, begs the famous question asked in the hit 1986 movie Top Gun by the protagonist Maverick “I feel the need – the need for speed!” as he and his Copilot Goose prepared to to take off in their F-14A Tomcat. The latest Core i7 is part of Intel’s “Extreme Edition” lineup – the highest class of consumer grade CPU’s commercially available. It offers Six physical processor cores and through Intel’s Hyper-Threading an extreme 12 “Virtual cores” capable of handling the most strenuous of tasks you can throw at it. While it comes clocked at an admirable 3.3Ghz, through Intel’s proprietary Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 it can go up to 3.9Ghz.
