The Mophie Boost is an iPhone battery booster in a tight compact form factor fitting for a keyring.

We have already reviewed the upmarket Juice Pack Air for the iPhone 4 (link goes to review) and so we saw fit to review the boost as an external battery to help you make a decision as to whether purchase this as an accessory or not.

Review: Design

The Mophie Boost is essentially long and narrow in design (rather than wide and short) meaning that it adds a few inches in length to your phone. The design and build quality of the boost is nice though, and the matte blue rubberized effect on the back along with the silver plastics make it feel of reasonable quality.

As with all recent Mophie products the Boost comes with LED’s which tell you how much charge you have left in your little gizmo at the press of a button, making it functional as well as practical.

The Mophie Boost is 2.03 in x 3.70 in x 0.63 in in size and 1lb shipping in weight making it very light and hand / pocket friendly; it has to be said that once it is actually in your pocket and placed in your hand you don’t notice it at all; You’d think that because of this the product is made on the cheap and you would be able to tell, however this is not the case, as the Boost essentially feels highly robust.

Performance

The Mophie Boost has a special high-output battery which allows for the ultra fast charging of your beloved iPhone.

Mophie claims that the Boost charges at up to twice the current as traditional 500mAh batteries, meaning that you can go from dead iPhone to alive iPhone in half the time of conventional chargers.

We found this claim to be true; we allowed our iPhone 4 to die completely (when you press the middle button when off no battery charge sign comes up) and then inserted the boost to our iPhone 4. What happened next was quite fantastic, as the Boost only took a total of 1 minutes 13 seconds to get our iPhone 4 to boot up (it usually takes around 3 minutes).

We found the Boost’s battery capacity to be satisfactory, as it charged our iPod from dead to 41% with 3G and Wifi enabled.

One feature that we like is the LED torch flash light that the Mophie Boost has which re-instates the fact that Mophie probably want you to keep this on your key ring.

Verdict

The Mophie Boost is by no means a complete solution to talking and playing longer on your iPhone 4, and Mophie’s Juice Pack Air is a far superior product to this, however it will allow for extended times when you are bored. In addition to this we find the Boost to be practical with its key ring functionality and LED flash light.

Priced at £49.99 online, we can recommend the boost as an ideal battery extension accessory for your iPhone 4, however not a solution to extending your battery for extended periods. The Boost is also a tad overpriced, and a RRP of £29.99 would seem more fitting to a product like this.

Official TB Verdict: 6/10
