Android ups its lead over Apple, holds 44% of smartphone market

With the iPhone 4S being very recently announced, and with Steve Job’s awfully sad and untimely death (may he RIP) on the 5th of October, new figures of the smartphone market have been released from ComScore and they reveal that Android has upped its lead over Apple, and now holds almost 44% of the overall smartphone market, compared to Apple’s 27.3 percent. This figure is hardly surprising, however, when every manufacturer and their dog has produced an Android handset (RIM excluded). Moving on to RIM, and they now hold  a 19.7 percent share in the smartphone market.

This is good news for Android, as the operating system has seen a 0.2% increase since just last month and with the Samsung Nexus Prime release looming, ComScore may very well be releasing figures in a month or two with a 45%+ share for Android. Time, as they say, will tell.
