Five of the best Smartphones in the UK right now

This post was completed early 2010:

In 2009 there was a huge smart phone buzz – forums were at high capacity, rumours were being flown around and now that we are in 2010 everything seems to be dying down; well, dying down for the time being anyway.
And so with little buzz, other than Motorola Droid owners getting their much craved over Android 2.1 update, there does not seem to be many people that interested in smart phones at the moment. But then again, all it takes is a Google employee to tweet something and hey presto – you have a buzz – what this might be then is ‘the calm before the storm’ < slack water if you like.
There are so many Smartphones out there now that you are spoilt for choice — spoilt I say! And for some people (not all) choosing the right Smartphone can seem a little daunting, especially with the pressure of being labelled an ‘Apple fanboy’ for having an iPhone or a ‘Geek’ for owning a Nexus One. I have compiled a list of Five of the best Smartphones in the UK right now because of just how many of these handsets there are on the market.
Hopefully, this list will give you an insight into the ones you should be looking out for;

Palm Pre

The Pre is almost certainly, if not definitely, the best smart phone in the world for multi tasking. The Pre will manage everything all at once seamlessly without so much as a sweat – quite literally, as battery life for all this multi tasking is pretty good. The Pre has the ability to link contacts, combine messaging and supports universal search. Features include Wifi, bluetooth, a QWERTY slide up keyboard, assisted GPS, a 320×480 24-bit TFT colour fully capacitive touch screen, an internal storage of 8GB, Micro USB port, an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz Processor nd a 3.15 MP 2048×1536 pixel enhanced fixed focus digital camera with inbuilt LED flash.
The Pre is currently available on 02 for £35 a month – with an additional £100 for the handset.

HTC Hero

The HTC Hero is by far and away one of the best Android powered handsets on the market today. HTC’s custom version of Android, HTC Sense UI, brought a truly modern and exciting twist to the original Android platform. Sporting one of the best virtual keyboards of its class, and with all the brilliant apps the Android market comes with, the HTC Hero is thoroughly recommendable. Specification wise the Hero has a 5 megapixel camera, 3G, Wifi, a Qualcomm® MSM7200A 528 MHz processor, a 3.2-inch TFT-LCD touch-sensitive screen with 320×480 HVGA resolution, internal GPS, a high capacity 750 hours stand by time battery, G Sensor technology and a digital compass.

Apple iPhone 3GS
To reviewers and Apple fans the iPhone 3GS is the king of Smartphones. Every single Smartphone that has ever come to market, after the original iPhone had been launched, was compared to Apple’s hit product. It runs in the Apple product portfoilo family genes for each sibling to get the spotlight – and at the moment, the 3GS is where it is at. Praised for its easy to use and intuitive OS, the iPhone 3GS is a Smartphone which you can literally pick up and use automatically – seriously, a chimp could do it. Lightning fast, with over 100,000 apps to dowload, the amount of multimedia you can have on your iPhone staggers belief. There is just one downside – no multi tasking. Specification wise the 3GS has a 3 megapixel camera, 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display, 3G, Wifi, Proximity Sensors and an accelerometer.
Available on Orange, Tesco Mobile, Vodafone and 02.

Motorola Milestone (Droid)

The Motorola Droid ships with Android 2.0 – but will recieve the 2.1 update shortly. The Droid offers the best QWERTY keypad of any Android phone, and it is a vast improvement on the G1. Fast, portable and surprisingly very thin, the Motorola Droid comes with social networking at its heart. A bit like Palm, Motorola has made a comeback recently as for 3+ years we have seen nothing from them. Jumping on the Android bandwagon has clearly helped. Specification wise the Motorola Droid has a 5 megapixel camera, light responsive display, aTI OMAP3430 600 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM, 512 MB flash ROM, a proximity sensor, magnetometer, accelerometer, 3G, Wifi and Bluetooth. The Motorola Milestone is a brilliant phone and one to definitely check out.
Available on Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

HTC HD2
The HTC HD2 is a powerhouse of a mobile phone. With a 4.3 inch display, this Windows Mobile device is a thorough alternative to any Android powered phone available today. With web page rendering speeds beating the Nexus One in benchmark tests, the HTC HD2 is a phone for the finger ready. The version of Windows Mobile it runs has been adapted with HTC Sense, the very slick UI seen on the Hero. Specification wise the HTC HD2 has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512 MB RAM, 448 MB ROM, a full capacitive touch screen, 3G, Wifi, GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth, proximity sensors and ambient light sensors. The HD2 is the fastest WM device in the world – and could be considered as a direct alternative to waiting for the Nexus One.
Available on Virgin Mobile, 02, Vodafone and Orange.

Awesome list! The best I have seen. Glad to see the HD2 getting some love finally. And not many people know it shares the same processor as the Nexus
. Didn’t know web rendering speeds were faster than the Nexus and just youtubed it and your right – they are.The HD2 is an awesome phone, my wife has a Hero and that is also a brilliant mobile phone. I am not in the least bit bit surprised that the Pre has some love in this post too, because I agree for multi tasking this phone is seamless.Thank you
Hey just found your blog on Google – I have a Pre and love it. Nice to see it getting mentioned – I moved to it from a Motorola Droid and prefer it in every way. Its great
I can understand why my phone the SE Satio was not included – the only good thing is the camera. It is to annoyin to use.
Good review. I never know Palm Pre is that much good.

Hi, Can I get advice on what phone to get? I am looking for a phone with a screen that’s large enough for comfortable web browsing. Most important is that the net is fast and can handle sites like youtube, download email and large text files. The difficulty I am having is that I don’t like touchscreens, either has to be a hybrid or have a qwerty on or slide out of the phone. Any ideas?? Price ideally should be £100 or less. Thanks,Lucy. (only handsets available in uk please.)PPPs
Hi Lucy,
Check out the Samsung Genio Slide or the Nokia E63 – both phones do all the things you say on a budget. However they are slightly over your budget. If you do not mind going on a contract, then the best phone for you would be the Motorola Droid.
I hope that helps, if not, them check out websites like dialafone and select the criteria you want from your mobile!
Thanks
Thanks Jakk,The Droid has some rubbish reviews out there so kinda put off getting that. Haven’t had a Nokia in years, is there OS android based, does any one know what the ovi store runs with if not? Suggestions still welcome people, maybe I should just bite the bullet and get touch but I text a lot and don’t want it to take hours. Tried the onscreen keyboard on my friends cookie and i think i invented a new language! Don’t know if that’s me or the input is rubbish on that model.Help please
Lucy,
The Cookie is a pretty poor phone IMO, and the touch screen on it I am sure has not helped you and your opinon on touch screens in general. Why not try a HTC Legend, second hand or new HTC Hero or even better the HTC Desire on contract! They all have fabulous touch screen keyboards.
The Noia e63 is built on Symbian not Android, and the Ovi store runs off of Nokia itself (to be honest the Ovi store is pants). Try out or read reviews on the above HTC Recommended phones
. What phone do you have right now?
Hi Jakk,At the mo I have a Sony Ericsson K7701, ok but the screen is quite small and I find myself wanting to use the internet more and more and even with 3g this phone still takes ages. Where is a good place to get HTC, looked at the older models but there still like £290 +. Second hand sounds like a good idea. One thing that concerns me tho is what happens with them when a call is made, read that the screen is really sensitive so my head could theoretically disconnect me, right? Sorry if I’m being thick and thanks for your help.
Lucy,
The call will not drop when pressed against your face it requires a sharp precision placed touch to do that.
Why not check out eBay for second hand htc. To be honest the best way to get a smartphone is through a contract as it bundles Internet, and will probably work out the same price with credit anyway
.
Good point, head hurts, just too many options! Thanks again.
No problem
! Any more queries please feel free to drop a comment
Does anybody know which kind of video files are supported? I keep in mind the Intuition only might dl 3gp utilizing opera mini. I downloaded the twist ap, possibly that’s the problem? How can I watch videos from websites apart from youtube? Which file sorts? Often I’m given the choice of 3gp or mpeg4. Cannot get either to work. Thank you in your time! Rattling I wish I used to be eligible for the improve to EVO!
