HP to provide Android and iOS apps for server administrators

HP (Hewlett Packard) has just revealed that it will indeed be offering up the remote administration and configuration of its servers, from applications on smartphones and tablets running Google’s Android operating system and Apple’s iOS operating system. The new applications being offered will provide information about the condition and configuration of the servers and also allow system administrators to manage and even shut down servers should they feel the need to protect data. A system administrator will also be able to check the location of a server in a data center through HP’s mobile apps, helping isolate specific server problems.
Now as you are probably wondering, the point to all of this is so server administrators can manage their respective servers remotely via their smartphone or tablet, making it a pretty neat tool for if something were to ever go wrong out of office. The apps will allow administrators to address various problems without the need to log in to data centers which can take time, cutting the costs of server maintenance considerably.
“We are delivering innovative intelligence technologies that enable servers to virtually take care of themselves, allowing data center staff to devote more time to business innovation,” said Mark Potter, HP software senior vice-president and general manager on HP’s latest Gen8 servers.
All in all, the new HP app’s seem like the right step forward regarding server maintenance. As of yet, we haven’t been involved with nor spoken with smaller host companies offering virtual private server control through a mobile device, so it could be interesting to see what new developments are made in this area come the near future.
