Motorola Milestone

[ 0 ] December 17, 2009 | Jakk

Yep you read the title right. The Motorola Milestone is here and boasts the latest update of the Android software. Dubbed as the iPhone killer in the USA could this really be it? I mean, after all the hype of recent phones dubbed as ‘iPhone’ killers is this just another kick in the nuts?

No is the simple answer. This is no schmuck. I mean look at it, with its large display and sleek lines all housed in a black metallic frame this thing means business.

The design is beautiful, however that sticky out bit at the bottom is a little hit and miss – a bit like Marmite I suppose, you’ll either love it or hate it.

The reason this phone has a ‘lip’ is because the screen is smaller than the keyboard, and naturally a ledge is there. I think this is okay as it should offer a bit more support when sliding the keyboard out.

The screen is a 3.7 inch QVGA which has been described as ‘fantastic’ with rich blacks’. The size of the screen will also make this phone absoloutely amazing to use, and with Androids new software on board a truly brilliant user experience.

My question is why not an AMOLED screen though ? I mean that is the future isn’t it?

The QWERTY keyboard also looks fantastic, and as this phone is quite long will make the keyboard brilliant to use – this device is surprisingly thin too – I mean it is thinner than the Google G1.

With all the components and the large screen the Motorola Milestone is quite heavy and weighs in at 165g. But I wouldnt find this a problem as I like my phones to have a weighty feel in the hand.

The gold button on the QWERTY keypad is a five way function pad although does look surprisingly like a fingerprint reader.

In terms of software the Android menu remains intact with only a few new icons, and as with 2.0 it also supports Exchange without the need of a special app – resulting in you being able to have multiple Google accounts (which is good).

Although I should point out that Google Maps will not be available for this phone (unlike its American counterpart) – you can look at this two ways, either that it is bad or they are paying Brits a compliment saying we don’t get lost :D . In its place comes Moto Nav which is new, and so naturally I assume will be quite rubbish.

Below is a comparison between the 1.6 menu and 2.0 menu;

For people whom generally (and this is a minority) like typing on a touch screen keypad this phone also has that function.

So there it is – the Motorola Milestone. Out of nowhere they came back into the mobile market and are taking the world by storm, it actually makes me quite proud to see Motorola trying so hard and doing so well. They made a great choice taking up Android and all credit to them.

However, is this really an iPhone killer? My opinion is no it isn’t. I have to say that premium brands have a large say in the smart phone market and so naturally when somebody says ‘premium brand’ you think _____ < yeah, the A word.

What will replace the iPhone? The HTC Bravo. It will be the big seller in my opinion.
