Magic Dust: The Palm Pixi
It doesn’t seem like yesterday since Palm brought out the Pre, a phone which for many resembled a company which was drawing it last breath.
The Palm Pixi, Palms second WebOS powered mobile phone, has already hit the USA and pretty soon will hit the UK.
The only gripe I have is that the Pixi has most of the features that the Palm Pre has, and with the amount of competition that the Palm Pre itself faces against both the iPhone and Android powered handsets is there really enough room for another handset in the mobile market?
I suppose it is being aimed at people whom want a WebOS powered mobile phone but in candybar form, also, the phone itself is a chunk of plastic, and not the metallic and glass feel so many people wanted from Palm.
My question is when will palm give us a form factor worthy of housing such a brilliant operating system? A little bit of aluminium wouldn’t hurt surely.
Apart from that so far in the USA it has had good reviews, with people calling it the ‘sister’ of the Pre – infact, if you slide up the Pre the Pixi looks exactly the same apart in candybar form.
The keyboard looks fantastic, with one reviewer calling it better than Blackberry QWERTY keyboards as there is no obstruction from a slide mechanism like on the Pre.
As for hardware the Pixi has a 2 megapixel camera, which is rubbish. I mean, Palm has taken a bad step in making the Pixi’s camera a low resolution as People are going to be swayed towards devices with 3.2 megapixels or above in 2010 < the number of phones with 2 megapixels will be minimul next year.
To compensate for this I hope Palm makes this phone a lot cheaper than the Pre on a Contract, as here in the UK O2 offer the Pre for £35 a month on a 24 month contract < an utter and complete rip off which nobody is going to be bothered with.
I look forward to seeing it on the high street, and as my contract is ending in in February 2010 maybe i’ll get it as an upgrade – after all, WebOS is the best of the best.
