The Palm Pre. Long have days passed as Apple’s share of the market for mobile phones has grew and Nokia’s share has decreased. Samsung has been throwing out touch screen ‘smart phones’ for years and just as Motorola has made it re-debut into the mobile phone world Palm has finally found ground. I find the Palm Pre a welcome topic in todays Technology Blogged post.
I think of Palm as a faithful old dog. Back in the day there was the Palm Treo – and for the lucky people that could afford one their mobile phones were the world. But now the pedigree that was once there has been lost and that young puppy that once had a sparkle in its eye is gone and has been replaced by a weak and limp old dog – still faithfull but not ‘all there’.
That is until now, and lets just say that the weak and old limp dog has passed and the cute new lively puppy has been added to the family. The Palm Pre is a welcome new addition to the smart phone market and is by far and away one of the most beautiful mobile phones ever produced. Its sleek lines and glossy front are so gorgeous and so modern that it makes the T-Mobile G1, The Motorola Cliq and yes dare I say it the iPhone look like ‘so last year’ *American accent*
.
And so with its Kate Moss lines and Lotus Cars racing pedigree this new addition to the mobile phone market is going to be a great success for Palm. For consumers it offers everything – a fantastic new interface called WEB OS and a brand new shiny QWERTY Keyboard which is something iPhone users are going to have to do without (a real keyboard, not an onscreen one).
The only thing this phone truly has to face is the hype which has been built up through its advertisements on television and consumer verdicts. Can it deal with the pressure? And can it truly deliver results that were only achieved when the original iPhone was released?
I am bored of Samsung’s phones now as they are all the same and offer nothing compared to Apple in terms of functionality and Nokia’s phone sales and whole market dominance is made purely through brand awareness.
We hope Palm brings its brand into the 21st Century and develops more phones like this. If this phone does live up to the hype – which we hope it does, then the Palm Pre is half way there to possibly becoming a new leader in the smart phone market.
What are your views on this phone? Is it hot or not?
