Sony buys out Ericsson in $1.5bn, £964m deal

Wow so it has finally happened, and the smartphone’s bearing the brand Sony Ericsson are no more, or are they? This is just one question which has come out of the just announced buyout of Ericsson, with Sony paying $1.5bn or £964 million for the 50% stake Ericsson has had since 2001. On the buyout, Ericsson said that the “synergies” between telecoms equipment and mobile phones were decreasing, with this playing a factor in the buyout.
Interestingly, the deal also includes patents, adding to Sony’s already wide portfolio, and a licensing agreement on any other intellectual property.
