Zune brand dead

It was all the way back in February when we covered this news regarding how the Zune brand wasn’t dead, and now a whole 8 months later it sort of is. Alas, then, Microsoft has confirmed that no more dedicated Zune hardware is to be produced or released, spelling an end to Microsoft’s sort-of-popular dedicated media players. With all bad things though come good things, and on the official Zune page Microsoft explains that they are cutting the production of Zune hardware so people can transition over to Windows Phone 7, Microsoft’s mobile operating system which Nokia signed a deal with back in June.

The actual Zune brand will stick around for a little bit through the Zune music service, which will function alongside existing Zune media players and Xbox platforms. This move from Microsoft, made yesterday, marks a new start for Microsoft and their mobile strategy and will help them shift focus towards their operating system, Windows Phone 7.
