Setting up your First Blog: Tips for Newbies

blogging tips for newbies

The first step to creating a good blog is to decide what the blog will be about. Is it going to be designed to promote a business, or it is going to tell people about your family life or your personal interests. Creating an interesting attention grabbing blog is easier when you set a goal for what purpose your blog has.

Choosing What to Write About

The subjects you choose to write about in your blog should be aimed at the people you intend to target. This is especially true when creating a business blog. Your target audience will often be defined by the type of website your blog is posted on. When posting to large networks like many of the social networks, you can narrow down your audience by linking to pages within the site that pertain to the same subjects you intend to cover.

What you write about should be consistent with your goal. If the blog is a personal one, you could write about the interests and hobbies you have or the experiences you have raising your children. If the subject matter keeps changing all the time, you will lose your target audience. Staying focused on a subject can be easier when you invite people to share their opinions and comments.

Your blog posts should also be current to keep people interested in reading it. Adding an entry at least once a week should be enough to keep readers loyal. Being current also applies to what you write about. It is better to write about the restaurant you went to the night before than to discuss one you visited more than a month ago.

Putting the Finishing Touches on Your Blog

Before you choose to launch your new blog you should have at least three posts on it. You also want to launch your blog at more than one site. There are a number of blogging sites available people can use for free. Simply creating the blog and launching it is not enough to bring in visitors, it needs to be promoted by linking with like-minded bloggers in a social network. By exchanging links with others you help them promote their blogs while they help you promote yours.

A blog can also be used to share information, tools and applications found on the Internet. By adding links to items that pertain to what you write about, you help make your blog more interactive. If you are writing about applications available for cell phones you could include links to some of your favorite application downloads.

Double check and proof read the content in your blog before launching. Paragraphs with short sentences that get to the point are easier to read than sentences that are long and drawn out. Create attention grabbing headlines and add headlines to subcategories and bullet points to highlight certain subjects. The bottom line is that the visual layout of the blog is as important as the information it contains. Pictures significantly enhance the content of a blog.
