The advantages of an LED TV

LED or Plasma? LCD or Plasma? What should I have for tea? Televisions are the single thing 95% of households across the US and UK have and choosing one in 2011 is certainly a rather tricky albeit exciting affair. First of all you have the display size which should be your first thought, secondly you have the price which makes you narrow down your choice, and then you see a TV so thin it blows everything else out of the water in design. Oh yes, today we’re talking LED TV’s, which upon first sight will be making you drool uncontrollably like Oliver Twist in a sweet shop and then boggle your mind like a cat on nip. Read on to find out the history of these latest technology TV’s and also what the advantages of an LED TV are over their competition.
When LED TV’s changed the world (not literally)
First things first lets get one thing clear; the majority of “LED TV’s” aren’t true LED, because they are in fact just LCD TV’s that use LED backlighting instead of the CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps) as used in traditional LCD televisions, however this doesn’t mean the results of the use of LED aren’t impressive or beneficial to consumers. Manufacturers must make it clear in their advertising what LED TV actually means.
LED TV’s first became main stream and in high street stores in 2005, however the very first commercial LED backlit LCD TV was the Sony Qualia 005 which was introduced in 2004. This product was a market test from Sony to ascertain the demand for LED, however the pricing for that particular model was slightly extortionate.
Why LED is better than LCD and Plasma
LED backlit TV’s are commonly known as giving better contrast than both LCD and Plasma TV’s as well as a brighter cleaner viewing experience. On top of this, if you were to compare any given LCD TV with any given LED TV you would notice a distinct increase in quality especially when it comes to viewing angles, and so LED Favours those who wall mount their TV’s in a fixed bracket whilst doing the ironing as an example of use.
On top of the above, Dell carried out research in to both different types of TV (LCD backlit and LED backlit) which found that on average LED TV’s use 40% less electricity than their LCD competition, enabling you to have a greener viewing experience and also save money on your energy bills monthly.
On top of viewing quality, and energy saving benefits, LED TV’s also come with a fantastic form factor and space saving qualities, with some LED TV’s even being as thin as 9.9mm which is just 2mm off the thinnest smartphone in the world.
Current drawbacks
As with all newish technology LED TV’s are priced higher than both their LCD and Plasma competitors, making them a sometimes pointless purchase over a price appealing LCD television. Over the course of the next 2 years, however, things will undoubtedly change in terms of pricing and so we predict that a 37″ LED TV by 2013 will cost the same as a 37″ LCD in 2011.

Great informative article, straight to the point. Which is unfortunately
not indicative of the consumer minefield in the high street. Thanks kindly.
Thanks Steven! It’s comments like this that really make my day.
I’m one of the few that prefer Plasma over both options, notably due to their robust design around Children (I have a young boy who loves to smash things).
