Check out the ‘Food & Drink’ section of any app store these days and you’ll find literally hundreds of apps designed to help you shop, prepare, order, cook and serve your food.  But such an overwhelming amount of advice may mean that even the most determined of foodies may struggle to know where to begin.  Working for a food website has meant that I’ve tried and tested a few food  apps in my time.  Here’s my pick of the best.

Epicurious

This comprehensive recipe site is now available in app-form.  There’s over 25,000 professionally-created recipes which can be filtered according to ingredients, type of dish and dietary consideration.  Each recipe features a shopping list and easy-to-read cooking format that takes you though the cooking process one step at a time. This is a brilliant app for all levels of cook, whether you’re a total beginner or seasoned chef wanting to try out something new.

Available on iPhone and Android.

Come Dine with Me

This spin-off app from the ubiquitous TV show of the same name helps you plan, prepare and pull off your own dinner party.  The app includes recipe suggestions, shopping lists, wine advice and the ability to store photos from the evening itself.  Perhaps the best touch though is the 50 soundbites from the show’s ever-entertaining narrator, Dave Lamb, enabling you to have your very-own acerbic running commentary on your evening’s processings!

Time to Roast

The key to pulling off a great Sunday roast is in the timing.  This app, which features guides to beef, lamb, port, chicken, duck, goose and turkey, makes sure everything goes in the oven when it’s supposed to with the timed alarms and easy guidelines making sure that any cooking novice can succeed.

20 Minute Meals – Jamie Oliver

For those of you hard-pressed for time, everyone’s favourite(?) cheeky do-gooder, Jamie Oliver has an app to help you knock up a great meal in only 20 minutes.  There’s the handy shopping list feature, step-by-step guidelines in photography form as well as an hour of video where Jamie runs through his essential cooking tips and advice.

Love Food Hate Waste

Apparently some British households throw out up to 60 per cent of all the food they buy.  This tool  is designed to help greatly reduce this food waste with tips such as the portion planner designed to ensure you cook only the amount you need.  If you follow their advice it’s estimated that you can save up to £430 a year in waste.

Available on iphone

Urbanspoon

Out and about but no idea what the resaurant options are in the area?  This app tells you what’s around and classifies restaurants according to neighbourhood, type of cuisine and price with of course a customer review system to aid you in making the best choice.

Teach me Sushi

A great little app for anyone wanting to make their own sushi from scratch.  There’s easy-to-follow videos that cater for the beginner sushi-makers to advanced.

hungryhouse

A nod to our own app which has become one of the most popular for the iphone. The hungryhouse app lets you easily browse the local restaurant menus that deliver to your area.  With everything from pizza and burgers to Thail and Vietnamese, you can flick through menus and take a look at customer reviews to help you make your choice.  The online ordering system means that you’re takeaway will be at your door with the mimimum of effort on your part!

This has been a guest post by Hannah Mason from hungryhouse, the UK’s leading online takeaway platform that features restaurants across the country including in London, Birmingham and Manchester.
