Sony’s Playstation 3 has always been the more expensive choice whilst sitting alongside the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, so it makes sense that Sony are cutting the prices of their consoles from €299 to €249 in Europe, with other cuts in the UK following suit soon. Other places to see a price slash include Japan and the US, and overall the price slash is around 5% in total. Overall this should help increase market demand for Sony’s game console for the foreseeable future and with it having Blu-Ray capability and a good media interface, the uses for the Playstation 3 are very high indeed.

Oh my lord. News doesn’t really get any bigger than this in the world of consumer technology, because Sony has just had all their current and future PS3 imports seized for ten days, after LG have won a patent dispute over alleged allegations surrounding patent infingement.

All of the PS3′s seized are being stockpiled in Dutch warehouses currently, and the numbers being seized are now growing dramatically. Sony is said to be “frantically” trying to find a loophole to release the stock being held, however the chances of this happening during the ten day seizing period is unlikely.

Sony and LG have been throwing patent infringement allegations at each other for over a year and a half now, mostly to do with hardware, and this latest blow to Sony is a sure sign that LG is toppling the Japanese firm. Both consumer electronics giants have been seeking bans on the other in respective countries around the world.

Hear that sound? Yep, that’s the sound of a million Xbox fanboy’s sat in a pool of their own tears, wading silently through broken dreams and staring deeply into the green light from their Xbox. The reason for all this is because of one man and his mission to turn his old ‘n’ busted Xbox 360 (RRoD) into a brand spanking new arcade pad for his precious (and still functional) PS3 with a large dollop of irony on the side.

Yep you read the title right, and yes it is completely true. Gran Turismo 5, which racing fans have been waiting for for well over one year, will finally have their release date very soon.

Polyphony Digital CEO and mastermind of the much loved Gran Turismo franchise and series, Kazunori Yamauchi (what a guy!), has announced that the release date for the heavily delayed GT5 title is “about to be announced”.

On this, Yamauchi said:

“It’s because time and labor were spent ironing the kinks out of [the game's] complex system. I’m really sorry. Everyone, it’s inexcusable… to have to wait a little longer.”

I think I speak for all Gran Turismo 5 fans when I say its okay Kazunori, just give us the game, please.

Gran Turismo 5 is set to be delayed yet again much to the dismay of Playstation 3 owners internationally, with a worldwide launch now not expected until the end of the year (but before Christmas).

In a statement issued on the official Playstation Blog, Sony said;

“We are sorry to say that Gran Turismo 5 will not be available on the previously announced release date of November 3rd, but the game will be released before Christmas. We sincerely apologise to GT fans for the delay, however creator Kazunori Yamauchi and the team at Polyphony Digital want to make certain they are creating a racing experience of the highest quality.”

Essentially then you die hard GT fans are going to have to get this as a Christmas present. It has to be said though that Gran Turismo 5 should be well worth the wait, as it is set to support 3D gaming, and will utilise the console’s online gaming credentials to offer play against 15 other gamers across the globe. Collaborations with Red Bull Racing and TV sensation Top Gear further add to the game’s heavy feature set.

Sony is to incorporate 3D into the PlayStation 3 this summer, according to John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing for Sony. In an interview John Koller revealed that the console’s 3D plans were on track for a summer release, just in time for Sony’s 3D TV range to hit stores, on this, he said; “3D is a major part of our initiatives in 2010 and we’re currently developing 3D stereoscopic games to come in conjunction with the launch of Sony’s 3D compatible Bravia LCD TV in summer 2010″

He then said, or rather purred; “The amazing thing about the Playstation 3′s technology is that all PS3 units that exist in homes and markets will be able to play 3D stereoscopic games as well as 3D BD movies through separate firmware upgrades – something that other platforms are unable to do.”

This comes as news as the Wall Street Journal released information that Sony are still making a loss on every gaming console sold. And so could 3D be the final push to get Sony a profit? Or are game developers still just grasping the graphical overlaying of current advanced games? Meaning that 3D will not be put to its full potential because of the lack of game developers with the experience?

Either way, it is good to see Sony back on track with what could be a good move for them. I am sure all Playstation 3 owners will gladly go through all the measures of updating and purchasing the necessary equipment to have a go at 3D gaming.

As a technology blog it is always nice to see that a great product gets the sales figures it deserves – from the Nintendo Wii, with its revolutionary control system, all the way to Avatar with its fantastic 3D visuals to which you are, admittedly, immersed within. And so it is also nice to see that the Sony Playstation 3 sales figures have grown this quarter – possibly because, like some of my friends, people have traded in their 360 to get a PS3 for the Blu-ray player and media control alone.

But it has also been revealed that Sony are still making a loss on every single Playstation 3 sold, according to The Wall Street Journal, which examined Sony’s fiscal third-quarter financial performance. The Wall Street Journal stated that the company loses 6 cents on “every dollar of PS3 hardware sales.”

That is a lot of money, considering the millions of hardware sales Sony makes. Despite the glum news, Sony still has a brigHt view on things – mainly because the console life span of the PS3 should outlive the XBox 360 before a new XBox release. ‘Futureproof’ is what the Playstation 3 is – mainly because of the Blu-ray player. Sony is also set to reduce its production costs by 15 percent, is a stamement Sony Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda said ” we are to cut production costs by 15 percent in the fiscal year ending March 2011.” He said that alone would help the company generate “tens of billions of yen.”
