We’ve covered very similar news before regarding Japanese electronics giant Sony, however up until now all of this technology news has been from the mouths of analysts and ‘industry experts’, who appear to have been right all along. Alas, then, as if you were one of the very keen gamers itching for Sony to release a next generation gaming console and ditch their current Playstation 3, you’ll have to weep in to your pillow tonight because Sony has finally come out openly and basically stated that the current generation of PS3 hardware is perfectly serviceable and that there is still a lot more options open to bring out better games.

““Gamers always need something new and more exciting. If they’re seeing just similar types of games coming year after year, they will quickly lose their interest,” Sony’s worldwide studios head Shuhei Yoshida said.

“Looking like that, when you see games coming out on PS3, both the traditional type of games as well as new kind of games using PS Move, there is a lot more we can do from the game development standpoint.”

Looking at it through the eyes of a consumer, one could think that the above words mean that Sony are trying to recover some money lost through poor sales of their Playstation Move accessory, which despite beating Microsoft Kinect in awards, couldn’t compete in Europe when it came to sales. From an analysis point of view, though, we could see some very exciting stuff from Sony in the near future, and Playstation Move may become a key part of moving forward with current generation hardware.

With the worldwide launch of the Nintendo Wii U to be hitting us square in the face soonish we see no reason as to why Sony shouldn’t get a little bit of a holla’ round here, and recent reports have suggested that Sony’s next generation flagship gaming console could see a pre-Christmas 2012 launch. As technology website T3 reports, Sony is expected to unveil the PS4 at next year’s Los Angeles based industry showcase next year, with a key feature possibly including Kinect style gaming.

Hugely popular, Kinect is a product from Microsoft which allows users to play games through movement. At the time of Microsofts Kinect launch, Sony launched their own style of motion gaming called Playstation Move, which the market didn’t take to too well. With the PS4, Sony will have clearly seen the success and usability Kinect brings to gaming, so it is very possible they will try to cash in on this popular market trend.

I have a Playstation 3, and I love COD: Modern Warfare 2 – the gameplay is superb and after playing it in high defintion on my 37” TV with surround sound I’ve come to think of myself as a super soldier, as sort of Captain America but with a gun, and a weird accent.

The campaign mode is vast, and the amount of terrorists or militia to shoot down never seems to bore me.

I have lately however, and this might just be me, started to get really frustrated with the online game mode which although retains the fantastic gameplay has one thing with it that p***es me off.

Of course, I am naturally referring to the fact that you can’t customly select which map you want to join – it randomly generates, and so if you have 10 minutes before you have to go to work, or ten minutes before your tea is ready, you can’t play the map you want.

But wait, it gets better – if you are like me, and don’t have many friends on your Playstation Network (my own choice) then you can’t create a custom party game because you’ll be on your own.

My favourite level on multiplayer, both split screen and online is The Terminal – which is a small map, in which there are hundreds of twists and turns in which you can annhilate your enemies.

And so if I could change one thing about this game I would allow the ability to customly select user lists that are playing on your desired level.

Another thing I would change is the ability to choose Private, Skilled and Expert online game user list categories so you can play people on your own level, mind, there would always be one Expert joining the Private games just to destroy people and get easy points.

You can add me on the Playstation Network @ Alec08.

Is there anything you guys would change about COD: Modern Warfare 2?

Okay so Technology Blogged is about Technology Hardware, and apart from mobile phone operating systems I have never done a post about any sort of software.

I wanted to stay clear of games I really did – but having played (and got it for a gift this Christmas) the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 I just felt obliged to post about it.

Okay I’m going to get straight to the point – this game is the best shoot em’ up I have ever played. It is far better than COD WaW and pummels the first Modern Warfare into the ground.

As soon as you put the disc in to your PS3 or Xbox then it automatically says ‘There is a level which could cause offense to individuals, would you like to skip this level’ – I clicked no ‘I will not be offended’ and carried on with my ‘Duty’.

On the third level, having cut some terrorists in half with a turret gun, I could see what they meant by ‘offensive’ as it was now my turn to be the terrorist – A Russian one, and I had to shoot hundreds of civilians dead. Pretty bad huh? Not because of what I actually did but because of what a reverse in roles it was to traditional gameplay.

So I shot the ‘goodies’ dead and then got killed myself by the terrorist leader who knew I was an undercover agent of some sort.

The story or ‘campaign’ mode is brilliant – the graphics are second to none, the sound effects are fantastic and the realism of body shots are incredible.

Then I switched to multiplayer mode and that was even better, the graphics took a dip but apart from that gameplay remained intact – Split Screen mode is my favourite, with my favourite level or ‘Map’ being the terminal which laid home to the thousands of innocent dead civilians I blew away earlier.

I can’t help but feel that I miss Nazi Zombies though, and would love there to be a ‘Nazi Terrorists’ add on available for download, as with the new modern weapons I’m sure I could survive ‘Nach der Untoten’ past level 21.

So there we are - not the usual post, and by the way if you are easily offended make sure you select the ‘yes I would like to skip the offensive level’ option.

A while ago Sony released the PS3 slim which got mixed reviews. Many people talked about the reduced fan noise and it operating faster on the menu, whilst other people talked about the ‘below-budget’ materials used in the design and referring to the texture of the PS3 as ‘taken from a Nintendo 64′.

Introducing the Playstation 4 Concept from designer Tai Chiem. Now, we may be a while away from even contemplating the release of such a console, but Tai Chiem does think otherwise and I thought what they hay when given an opportunity to write about it.

For me Sony’s first game console the Playstation was inspiring. After playing on one straight from a Nintendo 64 the graphics were immense as was the gameplay, the games may not have been as fun (Mario Kart 64) but hell the Playstation took the world by storm.

Then the Playstation 2 was released and I bought one almost immediately (although I didn’t queue up and camp outside a shop). It was brilliant and played my favourite DVD’s! I even sold my DVD player to cover the cost a little bit.

Then came the XBOX – This alien console was new to me and an invader, to me nothing was better than the PS2 and I didn’t want to believe the reviews. The reviews were true it was simply a better console.

And now we are all square, with the PS3 and the XBOX 360 being ‘as good’ as each other (both have good points). I prefer the PS3 just because it has a blu-ray player and a free network, but also because it does not feel like a hollow cheap thing to pick up I (no offense MS XBOX fan boys).

And so here we are with a new concept. And my is it strange. It draws on inspiration from a minimalist design and the console itself (the circular black thing) looks like the eye from big brother which ‘constantly watches’ :O.

The controller however has no faults – I mean look at it, it has the exact same layout PS users have come to love and admire and this concept has modernised it. I would particularly love the PS button and the like to be touch sensitive.

I doubt there would be much of a safety issue with the console being glass – they certainly would not use standard glass they would use super hardened stuff developed by NASA or something .

I do not think this design will ever hit shelves in the future. At the moment I’m sure its a case of hardware not housing, but the glass is a nice touch even if the ‘all seeing eye’ type center console is a bit weird. Take a look below for a size guide against a 37” television;

Nicely sized isn’t it? a little bit dinky and as it is see through and incredibly thin it would be classed as space saving. I have an idea for it though – wouldn’t it look absoloutely fantastic on a wall like televisions are put up? Imagine it sitting landscape orientated below your LCD television .

The controllers could also have their own little metal plate which attaches to the wall (rectangular) and the controllers could have magnets in them as to stick (keeps the minimalist design and saves space) – also with the new and soon ‘could’ be more advanced wireless charging mats the rectangular metal plate could have the same technology.

The console will also preview game trailers and demos on the glass space which looks blank when the console is off.

So there we are – no hardware specs I am afraid as none have been released – a nice thought from Tai Chiem though *thumbs up from Technology Blogged*.
