For everybody out there who owns a T-Mobile Sidekick you know full well that you are part of a very smart crowd. The T-Mobile Sideick is a ridiculously popular Android phone due to its awesome keyboard however now it has just got even better, because T-Mobile have announced officially the Sidekick 4G, and update to the current sidekick.

The Sidekick 4G will come packing a full 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen (no word on res), a Hummingbird CPU, Android 2.2 Froyo, a front facing camera for voice calling, HSPA and network speeds of up to 21 Mb/second. The Sidekick 4G is to retain its keyboard from its soon to be outdated older brother, however one change is that Samsung Electronics will now be manufacturing it. Price wise on T-Mobile prepaid phones you’ll be looking at around the same as when the original Sidekick launched, however this isn’t official as of yet.

We’ll keep you updated.

We have all heard of it, we have all pretty much seen it and everybody has mixed views and opinions on it. Reviewers show mixed praise, bloggers show mixed posts. But just what are you to do if you are in the market for a tablet, but want one which will multi task? The iPad is the first tablet to be shown the major spotlight, and with the official UK release date now revealed, you may be tempted to splash out for Apple’s latest offering.

But you do not have to snap up the iPad just because this is the first tablet to offer what you might want. Here is a round up of the best iPad alternatives on / soon to be on offer;

___________________________________________________________________________________

MSI Tegra Tablet – $499 (more for higher specs)

Computer and portable electronics maker MSI will launch its tablet PC in the second half of 2010 with an NVIDIA Tegra chip, the tablet was originally shown off at CES using the dual-core Tegra 250 chip and featured a 10-inch color touchscreen, but it wasn’t given a hard release window at the time. MSI will launch different versions of the tablet as well, some with bigger hard drives and added ROM.

___________________________________________________________________________________

HP Slate PC – $499 (£320)

The HP Slate will run Windows 7, and apparently be as portable as a mobile phone. Multi tasking galore, this tablet which is to be on sale later this year and will be under $500 and as such should be able to compete directly with Apple in terms of price range. The only question is – do you want simplicity and apps, or a powerful and highly functional UI?

___________________________________________________________________________________

Lenovo IdeaPad U1 hybrid – $999 (£610)

The Lenavo Ideapad U1 Hybrid is, and will be throughout 2010, one of the products I would love to own. Unfamiliar? Well heres the good bit; The 11.6-inch Ideapad U1 hybrid features a detachable, tablet-style screen. When the screen is locked in to the chassis it’s a Windows 7 Home Premium laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. When it’s pulled from its shell it becomes a Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered, multi-touch slate with 16GB storage, running Lenovo’s Skylight Linux system.

___________________________________________________________________________________

T-Mobile Vega – $TBC (£TBC)

Aimed at people who have a T-mobile phone contract, or internet connection, The Android-based Vega uses the Tegra 250 chipset that we now know as the NVIDIA Tegra 2, and T-Mobile are targeting the slate specifically at the ‘Mum’ segment who, they hope, will readily adopt it as the linchpin of their family lives. An Android powered tablet? Definetely worth a look. It could mainly be used as a home hub media center, controlling various PC extensions and connections.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Google Tablet – $TBC (£TBC)

Granted, it is early days yet – and granted, nobody knows exactly how it will look yet – and granted, it will bear the Google logo, seen as some as geeky. But come on, with the Nexus One being an awesome phone, you’d only expect the GTablet to be awesome too. Although no release date has been confirmed yet, expect it mid-end 2010. I will keep you updated, as this should be a major competitor to the iPad.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Getting online on the move – Mobile Broadband Guide

In recent times, we’ve come to expect more from our internet connections. Once upon a time a dial-up modem bringing you the wealth of the world’s knowledge at 56kbits per second was considered an amazing feat. Now we’ve grown accustomed to fast broadband connections which even allow us to stream TV and video. Additionally, growing numbers of us are finding that just being online when we’re at home or at work is not enough – we want to have all the internet can offer at our fingertips even when we’re on the move. And that’s where mobile broadband comes in.

What is mobile broadband?

Mobile broadband uses either an on-board modem or an external USB modem (or ‘dongle’) to connect your laptop to the internet via the mobile phone networks. This means that unlike Wi-Fi services, it doesn’t involve you looking for a hotspot in a café or a hotel; and unlike smart-phone 3G internet services, you have the screen size, the keyboard and the processing power of your laptop to work with. Mobile broadband means that you can get online where-ever you are, providing you can get a mobile phone signal.

Who uses it?

Mobile broadband has proved extremely useful for anyone who works on the move – in particular business travellers wanting to make the most of that train journey or airport wait. It also suits anyone who likes to stay connected whilst out and about; and works really well for people who don’t want to get involved with landlines, cables and modems and such – so for example students who change accommodation frequently and don’t necessarily have a landline connection.

Sounds great. What’s the catch?

Mobile broadband is still quite a young technology, and while advances are expected soon, at present connection speeds fall noticeably short of what you’re used to on your home broadband connection. To give you an idea, home broadband connection speeds are advertised as anything up to 50Mb, whereas the top advertised mobile broadband speed is 7.2Mb. Advertised speeds can be extremely misleading, but the fact remains that you will notice your mobile broadband connection being slower than your home connection.

How much does it cost?

As with broadband packages, mobile broadband tariffs vary a great deal. There are six main mobile broadband suppliers in the UK, and not by coincidence they are the big mobile phone network providers: 3, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone and Virgin. All of these providers offer a wide range of options, ranging from starter services at around £5 per month up to tariffs which include a subsidised laptop and a large data allowance for around £40 per month.

The key to finding the right tariff for you is firstly to know your options, and secondly, to use an independent online comparison service such as http://mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk, which brings all of the provider tariff information together in one place.

Mobile broadband contracts differ across a number of key aspects, so there are a few things to consider when shopping around.

Speed. As we’ve already mentioned, mobile broadband is slower than fixed line broadband in most cases – but as we’ve also mentioned, advertised speeds can be misleading. The magic words ‘up to’ allow suppliers to quote the theoretical top speed of their network, which is not necessarily the speed you can expect to see. Speed will vary according to which supplier you go for, how busy the network is, and how far you are from the nearest tower. However, most suppliers will now give you an estimated speed for your connection to their network.

Coverage. As with speed, coverage will vary according to provider, the congestion of the network, and your geographical location – so check first with a coverage checker, which are provided on many comparison websites.

Length of contract. Contracts are usually 12, 18 or 24 months. Some contracts can offer bundled mobile broadband free laptop deals which can be a great way of spreading the cost if you’re in the market for a new laptop. There are also pay-as-you-go options available for anyone not keen to sign a contract.

Download limit. Because data is more expensive to transfer via the mobile networks, mobile broadband tariffs will usually have a restriction on the amount of data you can transfer per month. Download limits start at 1GB which is relatively low and go up to 10 or 15GB per month. There can be penalties for over-use, though, so if you choose a low data cap make sure you know what you’re entitled to and read the small print.

About the author: Kate Thesinger writes on behalf of www.broadbandgenie.co.uk, the independent comparison website for broadband and mobile broadband.
