We covered what we know about the Wii U a little while back, and now we know something else. Out of the box, you’ll be getting only one touch-screen controller according to Nintendo themselves, and the Wii U supports just one touch-screen controller per console, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed. Miyamoto went on further to state that he doesn’t fully know whether players will be able to use two touch-screen controllers at a time either, saying that;

“We are doing research about if someone brings their controller to their friends house and they want to play together on Wii U to whether or not something like that would be possible”

What this leads us to presume is that Nintendo don’t fully know their own console yet, although in tests we have seen multiple Wii Plus controllers being used alongside the Wii U controller, meaning multiplayer is still easily achievable.

Have you been keeping up with recent rumours across the technology world? Well the latest rumours are that Nintendo will be demoing their update to the current Nintendo Wii, the Wii 2 (or Zii?), at the upcoming E3 conference. The original source for this rumor came from US magazine Game Informer, and according to them, the new and highly anticipated system is likely to support HD resolution.

An untold source also told Game Informer that Nintendo are doing this console right, and will not be shipping any gimmicks when the next generation console is released, pointing at much improved graphics; “Nintendo is doing this one right,” the unnamed source reportedly told Game Informer, “(It’s) not a gimmick like the Wii”.

The Wii 2 is expected to make a debut and launch in late 2012, however whether the Wii 2 will be able to match even the PS3 and Xbox360 in graphics is still unclear.

In the sometimes weird and wonderful world of hardware modifications there is fine line between functionality and down-right over the top, and the latest hardware modification to catch my eye is something I first saw on a forum around 2 months ago which is now a completed project, and stands in between functionality and OTT. This my friends is the part of this post where I introduce you to the liquid-cooled Nintendo Wii.

Created by Bit-tech forum member Angel OD, the liquid-cooled Nintendo Wii project, aptly named the “UNLimited Edition”, first came into phase 1 build stages all the way back in to 2009, and the final product (pictured above) looks pretty crazy and something which Professor Doc Brown out of Back To The Future would be proud of. Perhaps the most important part of the structure is the chassis itself, which has been forged out of solid steel.

I think you’ll agree with me here when I state that the design of this product is fairly amazing, and a true masterpiece. I also think I would do this project proud to leave this post with a quote; “We do what we must, because we can”.

For seven years on the trot Nintendo has never made a half year net loss on its product line. This has been down to slick marketing campaigns, highly competitive pricing strategies and appealing to a highly target orientated market. But this year Nintendo has posted a half year net loss, the first time in seven years.

Nintendo brought in ¥2.01 billion ($25 million) in the fiscal first half ending 30 September versus a profit of ¥69.49 billion a year earlier. In addition to the adverse affects suffered under a strong yen, Nintendo’s sales for the first half of its fiscal year were down 35 percent to ¥363.16 billion due to lower demand for its Wii console.

This could be a large reason to why Nintendo has just started marketing their limited edition red console here in the UK in time for Christmas. You have to admit though, that red console does look pretty sweet.

This morning I got news that Nintendo have filed a trademark for the word ‘Zii’ and this got me all excited. Thousands of thoughts jumped into my head all at once and all of them were of crazy designs and a whole new gaming console concept.

Having already written about the Playstation 4 Concept and XBox space shuttle thing I see myself fit to share this news with you. Could we finally have an official name for the Wii 2?

No is my opinion. The Zii is just a trademarked word at the moment, and in fact Nintendo has also trademarked a bunch of other names that are letters with ii after it. And so the sequal to the Wii could be anything.

They are basically covering their back in quick time knowing that the likes of Technology Blogged and Engadget will write about it (I feel priveledged albeit not worthy to mention us in the same sentence buy hey, who cares? )

So what could the Zii be?

Anything is the simple answer – either just a word like the others trademarked as to stop people gaining words that sound like Wii or an actual product.

I like to think that the Zii could be a new update to the DSi – a n upgradedtouch screen handheld if you like! I think Nintendo have Sony backed firmly against the wall with the PSP Go being a failure so far and so developing a new handheld system seems plausible (in my eyes anyway, and I can see juuuuust fine). Although why do that when their product is in its growth period? Once it starts to decline sure but not yet.

For me the ultimate thing the Zii could turn out to be is a new channel to add to its ongoing TV services. The Zii TV upgrade does sound catchy doesn’t it?

And so with this news I leave you pondering.

What do you guys think the Zii could be?
