ASUS PadFone Gets Real, Could Hit Christmas (Hands On)

Asus PadFone

Following on from my coverage of the ASUS PadFone last night (it was a long night) Engadget have gone hands on with the device, and Asus themselves have hinted at Christmas for an official launch as well as Android Ice Cream Sandwich to be the operating system of choice. All images credited to Engadget, the Asus Padfone looks like a rather cracking bit of kit in real life, and as stated previously in my coverage the smartphone is what powers the tablet, meaning the processing powers comes from the smartphone.

In terms of hardware, we’re not too sure exactly what specifications this smartphone will have being that it will be powering a larger display and running the compatible tablet, however we have a sneaking suspicion that dual-core processing power is certainly on the cards. On the software front, ASUS’s Benson Lin never fully mentioned whether or not this device would run Google’s next generation of Android, although he was quick to point out that smartphones aren’t cut out to run Honeycomb out of the box.

The tablet imaged above along with it’s smartphone is a mock up thus far, however we think ASUS has big plans for the concept in the future, and with Android’s next gen Ice Cream Sandwich hitting around Christmas, we’d expect it to be on shelves at this time (if at all).
