Could A ‘Lock-out’ Patent End Texting While Driving?

Texting while driving

Texting while driving. We’ve all been guilty of it at one point or another, and we can come up with a myriad of excuses why we just had to do it, even though we know it’s wrong and dangerous.

Despite the fact that there are several public service announcements, statistics, and other research that clearly show that texting while driving is a potentially fatal habit, people still do it anyway. Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of vehicular accidents, and the number one cause of distracted driving is not that gadget you hold in the palm of your hand per se, but using it. Safe driving should be your priority.

Smashing crash statistics

Looking at several studies of crashes and their causes, many researchers have pinpointed that the cellular phone is one of the only pieces of technology that can increase the likelihood of a crash by 23 times. Three in ten drivers have admitted to pulling their phone out while they were driving. Texting while driving is something that is widespread throughout the world and almost everyone has been guilty of it. This has led to many charities that are campaigning to put a stop to it. Many laws have also been passed to minimize the occurrence of texting while driving. In the UK alone, there is a £100 penalty imposed on drivers who are caught pulling out their phone at any time during their drive. This applies even when they are just stopped at a red light or during heavy traffic.

We have the technology to fix this

If you think about it, if we can fit the technology that is almost a thousand times more powerful than the technology that put man on the moon in the palm of your hand, we can probably develop another piece of technology that can stop us from averting our eyes from the road and keep us from crashing our cars. Fortunately, the good people who manufacture our phones have thought of this as well.

Apple has proposed to develop a “lock-out” technology that will also be integrated into their line of iPhones. This technology makes use of an on-board sensor system that has the ability to detect when a user is driving. The automated system would disable certain functions, such as text messaging services, when the user is driving.

Smart Technology to Prevent Accidents

Several car and mobile phone manufacturers have tried to develop other measures to prevent distracted driving. There are cars that feature video players that only display video when the car is at a full stop or when the car’s handbrake is engaged.

There is no single solution to the problem of distracted driving. And with the primary culprit for distraction being mobile phone, the people who use them most are at the most risk. And who are these people, you might ask? Teenagers. Teenagers use their phone at any time of the day. From the time they wake up to the time they’re in bed, their phones aren’t too far away from them. So it’s not surprising that the biggest causes of accidents for teenage driving is mobile phone use. This makes finding a technological solution to the problem of texting while driving all the more imperative. Apple’s “lock-out” technology can do just that.
