Social networking giant Facebook is now used by over half of the UK’s population, meaning that one in two people across the UK are signed up to the hit social networking site.

Speaking at a London-based media conference earlier this week, Vice President of Facebook Europe, Joanna Shields, said: “We can announce to day that we have reached 30 million in the UK, which we are really excited about.”

Nothing else was said regarding this user mark, or how many of these ‘sign ups’ actually login regularly, but at 30 million in the UK alone this figure is sure to wow a lot of people. Current numbers of global Facebook users estimate that over 500 million people are signed up.

Facebook has seen unprecedented user base growth since it’s 150 millionth user mark in January 2009. With the last UK figures coming in July last year with 26 million UK-based users, more than 4 million additional UK residents have signed up to Facebook in the eight months.

  1. Facebook’s growth is vast compared to other similar or comparitive companies. Myspace for example has been left in the dust!
