Facebook Privacy

Facebook isn’t the greatest company in the world at handling personal information, however who can really blame then when 99% of its users post everything about their lives on it? Well one group in Europe has had enough. European privacy group Europe v/s Facebook has filed 22 complaints with the Irish Data Commissioner, who in turn has announced that a through investigation is to go under way surrounding privacy. Although this news isn’t entirely applicable to the US in the first tense, this is bad news for Facebook in Europe as they are governed by Irish and European data protection laws.

“This audit will examine the subject matter of the complaint, but also will be more extensive and will seek to examine Facebook’s compliance more generally with Irish data protection law,” Gary Davis, Irish deputy data protection commissioner, said in a statement to The Financial Times.

The complaints filed against Facebook are down to one simple reason; Facebook has been under scrutiny for a long time surrounding the way they handle personal information online, and some of the complaints include the fact that Facebook tracks users online activities using cookies even after they have logged out. In all ways, this investigation is going to be interesting to watch, especially with the huge rise in popularity of social media websites such as Twitter and Tumblr.
