Firefox Mobile coming ‘Late 2010′ to Android

[ 4 ] Posted by on February 18, 2010

After in recent years grabbing a significant share in the desktop web browser market, Mozilla Foundations seems all set to make a mark in the smartphone domain.

One executive at the Mozilla Foundation indicated that the mobile version of the Firefox web browser is inching closer to finish and could be released as soon as this year.

In an interview with Tech Radar, Jay Sullivan, VP of mobile at Mozilla Foundation, said that an Android iteration of the Foundation’s signature Firefox browser will be made available by the end of this year.

Since Android mobile OS is Java-based and Firefox browser’s code is written in C and C++, there was difficulty in bringing Firefox onto the Android platform as it involved dealing with a lot of technical tasks behind the scene.

However, Sullivan sounded pretty optimistic about the Android platform when he said: “It’s a modern OS, and it’s a great fit with us. It’s the type of platform that has a high affinity with the early adopter, and it’s seen a lot of uptake”.

Sullivan also revealed that the Mozilla Foundation should be releasing a mobile browser for Windows Mobile. But mentioned that Mozilla has a decision to make as to whether to release a browser for 6.5.3, or wait it out and release a mobile browser for series 7.
