Google sees its Nexus One trademark refused

[ 0 ] Posted by on March 16, 2010

Ever since Google filed the Nexus One trademark on 10 December last year they have been under certain scrutiny. From comic book junkies to iPhone lovers people said the name was unoriginal, geeky and just all round boring. But now it seems that in connection to mobile phones, and despite there not being another Nexus phone on the market, the US Trademark Office has this month issued a notice of refusal for the name ‘Nexus One’.

Google has six months to respond to the refusal with evidence that will support the trademark’s registration — most likely arguing that Integra Telecom’s mark does not reference a phone. Google can keep using the name until Integra sues it for infringement, at which point they may come to an agreement.

This latest blow under Googles belt could see their hit handset having to have a change of name. And with that, future releases of phones from Google (Nexus Two) will also have to have a different name in their DNA. I’m thinking GPhone, and the chaps over at CNET reckon it should be called the Oogle. I will keep you informed.
