Google to be investigated for monopoly tactics

[ 1 ] Posted by on February 24, 2010
Google is to face a preliminary investigation on whether they penalize competitors in their search ranking algorythm.

The investigation is to be headed by the European Commission, and is to assess Google’s vastly dominant position in online browsing and digital advertising following tough allegations that it demotes competing websites to lower ends of the search results.

The main allegations and complaints brought forth focus on the way in which Google’s search results are compiled and on the terms and conditions the company attaches to deals with advertisers.

In a statement, Julia Holtz, Google’s senior European competition counsel said; “We are confident that our business operates in the interests of users and partners, as well as in line with European competition law”.

Google currently owns 80% of the european search market, with little competition from their competitor Bing. Google, no doubt, will see this as a direct attack from MS after they merged with Yahoo – a tactic which so far has had little effect on Google’s highly dominant place on the internet.
