Intel set to introduce faster Atom processor on Monday

[ 1 ] Posted by on February 26, 2010

Intel is set to release their new faster version of its ‘Pine Trail’ Atom processor for Netbooks on Monday, which will bring a little extra performance to this  highly popular and ever growing segment of the laptop market.

Netbook manufacturers such as Acer, Asus and Toshiba are expected to announce new products or product refreshes with the new processor, the N470, which will be identical to the current 1.66GHz N450 but should get bumped to a speed of 1.83GHz, which should further the ability of both their current line ups and later releases.

Atom processors are single core chips, which, with the bump up to 1.83GHz, should allow Atom processors to compete a little better against their mainstream chip cousins like Pentium and Celeron. Atom processors have always been performance-constrained since their debut release over one and a half years ago. The new more efficient Atom chips have a slightly different architecture to the ones currently installed within Netbooks, and whilst the Atoms at this moment favour battery life over performance, the new Atoms should give you a little bit more performance without increased energy consumption.
