The iPhone 5 launch date could be far earlier than expected
Apple is said to be dropping the design of the iPhone 4 soon, with rumours that an iPhone 5 is to be revealed Q1 2011. The claims of the imminent iPhone arrival come from the Wall Street Journal, of all places, which reports that “people familiar with the matter” (inside sources, basically) have confirmed the iPhone is to receive an overhauled chipset in order to contend with a rise in competitive high-end smartphones running versions of the Google Android operating system – in simple terms, the latest versions of the Snapdragon processors save battery life whilst being just as fast as the older version, thus outperforming the Apple chipset in some senses.
Different form factor
The Wall Street Journal has also reported that the iPhone 5 will feature a “different form factor”, adopting a brand new design following the antennagate issues that plagued the launch of the current handset and resulted in signal issues and dropped calls (perhaps this is the reason to why the iPhone 4 White has been delayed for a ridiculous length of time?). Another reason as to why Apple could ditch the design of the current iPhone is due to the glass back scratching and cracking easily, see Youtube for proof.
Reported by the Wall Street Journal to begin mass production later this year ahead of launch in the first quarter of 2011, the same time the iPad 2 is expected to be unveiled, the muted iPhone 5 update is to be released in the US with mobile network provider Verizon Wireless, ending the Stateside exclusivity deal AT&T has had on the Apple handset since the original device launched in 2007.
[UPDATE: The White iPhone 4 will not be here until 2011 and after the festive season, read more on this here: http://www.technologyblogged.com/technology-news/santa-will-not-be-bringing-you-a-white-iphone-4

Is it worth me moving to an iphone 4 in Jan then if the iPhone 5 will be out in q1? I’m sooo confused!!! This or Android?
@ Martin G,
You say ‘move’ to an iPhone 4, do you own a 3G S? If so, then move the the 4 if you would benefit from a better res screen and better camera. If you wouldn’t benifit from these, then no, don’t move. If the iPhone 4 will be your first iPhone however, then you’ll love it because it is a fantastic smart phone.
As for this or Android, a question you made, choose what you prefer – ease of use, or advanced features. The iPhone is far easier to use than Android and is also for that reason more efficient in daily use, however Android is more advanced than iOS in that the features it can provide to a user.
I have completely skipped the Iphone 4, even though my current 3gs contract had run out, there were so many issues with the iphone 4 and all the signal kerfuffel, that i though ti would skip it and wait for the next one. I love apple, but i dont think it was worth it for to to upgrade! so i hope this speculation is indeed correct and i can finally upgrade!
