Intel and Nokia partner-up: MeeGo to take on Android

[ 0 ] Posted by on February 15, 2010

Intel and Nokia have recently joined forces to take on the hit mobile phone operating system Android, the new OS, which takes all the best bits out of Maemo and Moblin – Intel’s and Nokia’s existing Linux-based platforms, will be called MeeGo.

With Symbian not punching its weight when it comes to smartphones lately, and Nokia losing market share thanks to Android, this latest development – which sees Intel and Nokia partner-up, could see Nokia grab some of that market share back if MeeGo is a decent direct alternative to Android.

Unsurprisingly, Qt will be the development platform of choice for MeeGo, which shows Nokia’s true dedication to the platform. Intel was also keen to stress that the MeeGo OS won’t be limited to x86 architectures either. It’s an open platform for everybody, regardless of chipsets, architectures or form factors.

The true question is can MeeGo take on Android? Because seriously, that little green Android is incredibly powerful – nearly everybody knows that logo now and it has become a brand in its own right. Any Android powered handset is thought of as sophisticated, albeit a little geeky, and you know that when you buy something running that green robot that you’ll be more than happy with whats under the hood.

We look forward to testing out MeeGo in the flesh, and will keep you updated with anything new.
