Microsoft Gunning For U.K. Retailer Comet Over Sale Of Counterfeit Copies Of Windows
Technology news. U.K. Retail outlet Comet is under fire from Microsoft for allegedly selling 94,000 pirated copies of Windows XP and Windows Vista recovery disks that they personally bundled with each computer purchase. Comet was allegedly producing the recovery disks at a factory in Hampshire. Comet who are currently owned by French retail company Kesa Electricals PLC, is reportedly in the process being purchased by private equity firm opCapita LLP at a later point this year. Microsoft takes piracy of their products very, very seriously. On a side note, many OEM’s made it a habit to ship their own version of the Windows recovery CD alongside the pre-installed copy that came with the computer. This way if your PC crashed (habitually with Windows Vista, Windows XP had a great reliability rate) one could easily re-install the operating system without having to purchase another copy of Windows. This practice was officially ended with Windows 7, albeit many manufacturers do offer consumers the option to purchase a genuine recovery disk (for a small fee, usually $20) when purchasing a computer directly through them. Many new computers now come with a recovery partition installed on the Hard Drive that can be accessed in the event of a system failure.
