New robot ‘hunts’ in packs

[ 0 ] November 30, 2009 | Jakk

If, at some point in the future, you see a large swarm of robots loudly buzzing towards you, don’t be alarmed. They’re probably coming to rescue you.

The Sensorfly is the first prototype in what will eventually be a swarm of dual-rotor helicopters, designed to scout dangerous locations in disaster response or urban combat situations. Each bot assumes the role of either a scout or an anchor: scouts actively search an area until they bump into something, at which point they drop to the ground as anchor nodes, providing a point of triangulation to aid the mapping activities of the remaining scouts.
