Ofcom Bans 36 Month Contracts, Makes 12 Months Law
It really would be an ideal world if every single network provider offered 12 month contracts on their products and for a while now the majority of them have touted 18 months as their base plan, and 36 months as their peak plan. Now however Ofcom has regulate the whole issue as to comply with the EU telecoms law, and has banned the selling of 36 month contracts and made 12 month contracts a necessity by law.
In the new regulations, the regulations require that mobile providers transfer customers’ mobile phone numbers to a new provider within 24 hours, bringing a time scale to an issue which has never had one. If these regulations are breached, providers must now pay “reasonable compensation” to customers.
Ofcom has decided that network providers should write, design and send off their own compensation scheme for customers, however will review the schemes within 12 months to make sure everything is satisfactory.
