iPhone OS 4.0 sees multitasking for 3G S users but 3G users in the dark

Apple has recently released OS 4.0 for the iPod Touch line and iPhone users – but if you have a pre 2008 model iPod Touch, 3rd gen 8GB iPod Touch or iPhone 3G then multitasking is a no no for you.

Apple say this is because the hardware in the iPhone 3G and lower powered iPod Touch devices can not handle multi tasking, in fact, they say they can not even handle custom wallpapers either. What makes this ridiculous is that jailbroken iPhone 3G devices which have been jailbroken using Winterboard / Cydia handle ‘backgrounding’ perfectly well.

This comes as news as the iPhone 4 is soon to be available to UK customers, with one of the most important hardware improvements over the old 3G S being an A4 processor which is the same as in the iPad. So then, it seems Apple is trying to get out with the old and in with the new < but seeming as a lot of iPhone 3G S and 3G users still have 12 months on their contract, is the iPhone 4 truly going to be an upgrade worth all that money? Or will OS 4.0 be enough for you 3G S users?
