Sony Playstation Smartphone with Android coming, sources say

[ 2 ] Posted by on August 13, 2010

Its an odd combination no doubt, but hot on the horizon for a couple of months now, and hot on the rumour list, has been a Sony Playstation Smartphone running Android 3.0 Gingerbread (exciting it sure is!). And now a ‘trusted source’ has contacted Engadget overnight, telling the US site that the new phone will come rocking a similar design to the somewhat unloved PSPgo (great start, not). That means a landscape slider, featuring a standard QWERTY keyboard for gaming keys, a touchpad for analogue controls and even the same shoulder buttons as a PSP.

The actual screen is rumoured to be between 3.7 and 4.1-inches, while inside a 1GHz processor will ensure games run at an appropriate speed. What’s more it’ll have a camera slapped on the back, which is said to be to be up to 5 megapixels, there is no word on the lense though. It’s said to come rocking not only Xperia branding, but also the PlayStation name too, a combination which could be a new era for Sony.

Design wise, the above image looks tasty. In fact, it looks edible. It is hard to say whether games will come directly from the Android market though in the form of apps, or direct from the Playstation Store. Perhaps Sony can make a deal with Google to ensure Sony gets its own space on the app market and sell through there?

  1. GAMING NUTT says:

About time Sony did something decent with the PSP sub brand, rather than releasing tasteless pieces of crap which in no way have ever been able to compete in a world of the DS and Touch.

One thing I’ve noticed with Sony is their complete inability to actually learn from past mistakes. I hope to the person upstairs that sooner rather than later they learn, and this mobile phone with Xperia and PSP branding looks like a positive step forward.

  2. Can’t see that being a big seller, I suspect it’ll fall short of being a good smart phone and even shorter of being a good portable gaming device.I hope I’m wrong though :-)
