Sony stops manufacturing the Cassette Walkman, finally

[ 1 ] Posted by on October 25, 2010

It may come as a huge surprise to many people that this time last year Sony was still manufacturing Cassette Walkman’s for the world. With 30 years of life and over 200 million players sold, the old clunky cassette players have been ironically decommissioned on the exact day of the 9th anniversary of the iPod’s launch – a product which for many is just as iconic as the Cassette Walkman itself.

So after 30 long years why now is it that Sony had killed off this iconic product? Well Sony’s reasoning behind the end of its hugely popular product was the lack of consumer interest, maybe that’s because no one knew they still existed (Ha!). However, and in all seriousness, it is not surprising that with the age of digital music Sony has decided to cease manufacturing this product, and carefully moved it to the product portfolio first mocked up 30 years ago.

[UPDATE: The  New York Post has reported that China will continue production of the Sony Walkman Cassette Player for now. So do not fear lovers of the cassette player, you can still get your hands on it for the time being.]
