Tesco: “Android has overtaken iPhone sales”

The battle for market dominance between the iPhone and Android powered handsets is a rather focal talking point in technology news, and over the last few months there have been a lot of graphs and statistics leaning towards Android as coming out on top, and Android even becoming the market leader by 2012.
As if this wasn’t enough Tesco have now just announced that their Android sales have now surpassed the iPhone, stating that “There is a lot of choice in the market and as a result consumers are driving healthy competition between rival operating systems”. In 2010 before Christmas the iPhone was outselling Android handsets on a scale of 2 to 1 according to Tesco, however in January 2011 Android has seen huge sales growth and the sales for handsets powered by little green robots have surpassed the iPhone’s.
Tesco note that they find the operating system battle for market dominance a good thing, allowing consumers flexibility in their choice for products.
Why has this happened?
The reasoning behind the massive growth of Android phones in Tesco sales comes down to two things: Firstly, their sales have most likely increased due to the range of Android handsets extending since Christmas 2010, and secondly because (and we have no research backing this up) Tesco’s market demographic aren’t interested in the premium methodology surrounding smartphones.
On Android’s success, Graham Harris, chief executive officer of Tesco Telecoms and Tesco Mobile said;
“As one of the UK’s leading operators, these sales are a useful barometer for smartphone trends,” ”There is a lot of choice in the market and as a result consumers are driving healthy competition between rival operating systems.”
“Tesco Mobile prides itself on customer service and offering customers what they want, through a wide range of competitive deals on all platforms. In addition to competitive Android smartphone deals, we also offer iPhone on a variety of fantastic 12 month contracts”
