Tesco Value: ‘Cheap’ iPhone on new tariff

Three days ago Tesco announced they would be offering the iPhone in their mobile phone portfolio. The supermarket giant which in recent years has expanded it business operations to travel, insurance and banking has been in talks with Apple for the last 6 months over a new license which has seen Orange become another iPhone tariff distributor.

So what are the prices? Well, you could have the iPhone 3G for £20 a month or the iPhone 3Gs for £20 a month. Sound good? well wait my iPhone hungry friends as there is a slight ‘catch’. You will have to pay an upfront cash payment of £222 for the iPhone 3G and an even higher payment for the 3Gs which is said to be £320.

Now, both tariffs include £60 of calls and texts a month which isn’t so bad.

And so it seems Tesco have utterly and completely undermined the other mobile phone operator deals which reminds me of the Tesco Land Acqusition which stormed into newspapers nationally.

Tesco will also offer the 3G and 3Gs on a triple credit pay as you go plan.

I suppose the only thing stopping people is going to be that hefty up front sum of £222 and £320 which is no small sum. It is supposed to entice customers who do not want to be on a lengthly contract and I suppose there is a lot of people who this appeals to.

Tesco value? Sure. Tesco motives? To get a quick and steady raise in revenue.

I hate Tesco – I am sorry but I do. They consistently harrass local farmers and sole traders and put good hearted people out of business and so you won’t see me with an iPhone on Tesco Mobile.

With all the publicity about Apple not being a green company I suppose they are a welcome affiliate for Tesco with their own ethical and moral issues constantly being raised by pressure groups.

You can get a perfectly good iPhone 3G or 3Gs on e-bay which works out far cheaper than the ongoing cost of a contract tariff. I love the iPhone do not get me wrong – my problem is not with the iPhone here it is just who is supplying the iPhones.
