There is a lot of buzz around the latest announcement by LG. They are going all out to show off their newest television innovation at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada this year. They will present their ridiculously large OLED technology 55 inch four color television at the CES. Everyone is anticipating this to be the big draw this year, because there is so much talk about it. The 4mm thick TV only weighs a trivial 16.5 pounds. That’s right; a 55 inch that is not even 17 pounds!

For anyone wondering what OLED is, it stands for organic light emitting diode which is a new display technology. It allows for a brighter picture that is more efficient. OLED television sets also have a better contrast and their refresh rates are faster. This technology used carbon based organic materials in between two conductors and electricity is applied. This created a very clear bright light that does not need to be backlit. Also, making this technology so efficient is that each pixel is actually one of the OLEDs. This technology is still developing and possibilities, such as a see through or translucent OLED TV and/or one that can be pliable and wrap around a pillar, for instance, is still underway.

Now back to the huge OLED 55 inch television by LG. The release date for the public to be able to purchase one has not been released, but is expected to be somewhere in the third quarter of 2012. The price has not been leaked by LG yet, however is likely to be in the $8,000 dollar range. Many industry watchers say for this product the price tag may just be worth it. The contrast is said to be amazing with 100,000,000:1 ratio. This causes deep dark blacks and bright vibrant colors that pop off the screen; they call it Infinite Contrast.

Other features on the massive OLED 55 inch LG TV are RGBW, which is the four color technology that uses blue, white, green, red, and blue and it has 1,000 times faster refresh rates than Plasma and LCD televisions. The RGBW color technology is even more true to real color than the previous RGBY technology, which uses yellow pixels. All of these features make the image quality on the screen stunningly bright and very realistic. As of now the model number given to it is 55EM9600. The amazingly beautiful screen even has a viewing angle of up to 180 degree.

However great this OLED television is going to be, there are some industry experts that say it is a lot of technology in one TV and there will be no media to view on it that will be up to its standards. For instance, “Hollywood” is still filming in 24 Hz and not in the 100,000 Hz. They are saying that currently the closest media technology to match this LG TV would be Blue Ray. However, Blue Ray is still not up to the specifications of the LG 55EM9600.

Aside from the media concerns by some, most everyone across the internet has been in a fit over this television. The LG 55” OLED TV is already making news, even before its big reveal at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas later this year. In all this buzz not only are the techies following this news, but many consumers as well, making this one of the most anticipated TV innovations in a long time.

[Update: Now unveiled]
