The Lion King tops Blu-Ray charts, Disney classics in high demand

You don’t have to spend millions of pounds to perfect animation graphics and pay actors millions of pounds on a new project to get a film to sell like a hot cake. What you really need is an all-time classic, some new consumer technology to refresh it and a splash 3D to get the ball rolling this year, just like The Lion King has done.
For the week ending 10/09/11, the Lion King, originally released in 1994, became the top selling blu ray disc with 1.57 million sales and it also grossed more than $90 million in 3D theatres worldwide. Pretty amazing huh? What’s more, it isn’t just The Lion King which has had success in the Blu-Ray market, as Disney’s Beauty and the Beast also hit the number one Blu-Ray spot on October 4th until the 10th, beating the new Karate Kid and Iron Man 2 in overall sales.
All in all, the Blu-Ray market appears to be extremely profitable for Walt Disney as there is clearly a massive demand for their classics to be re-made in to modern stunners. We’re not sure if however the sales above count in the Blu-Ray / DVD combo packs which are popular, as these products contain both disc formats yet are counted as BD sales. Either way, it’s fair to note that any classic Disney film such as The Lion King, re-mastered in to HD, will sell extremely well.

I think the Lion king worked really well in this format. Hopefully they’ll do more from the Disney back catalogue; Aladdin would be nice to see next. Thanks from Lion King tickets London
Me too, it’s great to see a classic get the modern treatment
