The mini home made wind turbine that blows us away

[ 3 ] Posted by on September 30, 2010

Wind turbines stew up arguments across the world and here in the UK they have agriculture groups throwing debates nationwide surrounding whether they even do any good, and exactly why they should be discontinued as an alternative energy source due to their ‘eye soar’ appearence (debateable) and whole transportation process.

However as far as wind turbines go this DIY job one looks the part, and makes us want to build one ourselves after a quick review of the homemade energy system. Viewable through it’s very own little story at http://www.gotwind.org/diy/12-inch-mini-turbine.htm, this 12″ wind turbine uses a hugely powerful N42 Neodymium cylinder magnet which is diametrically magnetised.

On the project, the creator states on their website;

This was a very successful project, I used an off the shelf  3 bladed propeller, beautifully balanced and extremely strong, made from glass filled nylon, they are designed as ‘pusher’ props and can spin at up to an amazing 13 000 rpm when driven by a radio control plane engine. I suspect just 2000 rpm will be my max as a wind generator.

The majority of industrial wind turbines use Anemometers as their source of consistent rotation and wind speed detection, including this home made one. You can find out more about Anemometers by going here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anemometer.
