Will OLED televisions go mainstream?

[ 1 ] Posted by on May 26, 2010

Televisions over the last 5 years have come on leaps and bounds, with advancements creating stunning visuals and colour reproduction especially from the likes of up to date Samsung LED televisions. On this Technology Blog, I have always been incredibly fond of television advancement and have been looking forward to the thought of an OLED TV for absoloutely ages. So it comes as good news to me, and hopefully you too, that an LG and Samsung OLED TV is in development which could spark a new fantastic range of televisions.

OLED displays have one heck of a lot of advantages over current technologies, making LED and LCD TV’s look so last year. One of the main things that I love about OLED (or the Organic Light-Emitting Diode) is that OLED displays require absoloutely no backlight in order to function effectively, they maintain their fantastic quality colour and deep blacks whilst being almost as slim as a fry.

Currently however, and this is a big ‘however’, OLED displays are only available on screens of around 11-15” in size. Although manufacturers have more recently announced plans to extend that into the 20’s and even into the 30’s in the near future, other major companies have made it perfectly clear they have no interest in exploiting the OLED technology – which is most probably because people have become accustomed to televisions above 37 inches.

So at the moment OLED televisions won’t be mainstream, as the technology is incredibly expensive and the development process of OLED is incredibly high. I’m sure you guys are fully happy with your LCD or Plasma Tv’s though, and seems as it is the FIFA World Cup soon I’ll bet a fair few of you have bought brand spanking new ones. If you are gagging for an OLED display though, the likes can be found on the Google Nexus One and HTC Desire < premium handsets for the OLED fanfare.

So the future definately looks set for OLED, even though major businesses who’s development labs know one heck of a lot more about me differ. Perhaps one of the most significant things that will make this technology the choice of the future is that OLED TV’s can be made transparent which would have a fantastic aesthetic appeal within the home. Certainly, it would allow the TV’s to blend seamlessly into many home entertainment systems.

Insightful post. OLED Televisions are a great technology and I know how clear they are because I have a HTC Desire and love it. It keeps power consumption down too as there is no backlight!
